I know this may sound ridiculous, but this is proven and tested by me. When your hard drive starts to make those annoying clicking sound caused by the overheated metal parts that have expanded, then its time to perform the necessary back-up procedures before your hard drive gives up your data permanently.
Placing your hard drive inside the freezer cools and shrinks the overheated metal so your hard drive may mount properly and work for a couple of minutes giving you extra time to back-up and transfer all your files to another hard drive.
Give it a try, you have nothing to lose anyway, it’s way better to take your chances that to let your hard drive give up your data without doing anything.
